Benefits of Fiber + Using Local Produce

What is dietary fiber? Fiber includes the parts of plant foods your body cannot digest or absorb. There are two types of fiber:

1) Soluble fiber:

  • Dissolves in water

  • Helps lower blood cholesterol and sugar levels

  • Found in foods like oats, peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits, carrots, and barley

2) Insoluble fiber:

  • Does not dissolve in water

  • Promotes the movement of your digestive system

  • Found in foods like whole-wheat flour, wheat bran, nuts, beans, cauliflower, green beans, and potatoes

There are many health benefits to having a high-fiber diet:

  • Normalizes bowel movements

  • Helps maintain digestive health

  • Lowers cholesterol levels

  • Helps control blood sugar levels

  • Aids in achieving healthy weight

  • Helps you live longer

Take advantage of fiber by incorporating fiber-rich foods into your diet! As always ask your dietitian for additional recommendations and make it a family affair! Engage the whole family in healthy meal and foods choices.
